Heat and Lightning Policy

The safety of our players, coaches, and spectators is our absolute priority. Leichhardt Saints FC strictly adheres to the Football NSW safety guidelines.

1. Hot Weather Policy

Children are at a higher risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. We monitor temperatures closely to ensure safe play.

Recommended Temperature Limits:

  • Children (Under 18): Activities should be cancelled or postponed if the ambient temperature reaches 32°C.

  • Adults: Activities should be cancelled or postponed if the ambient temperature reaches 37°C.

On-Field Requirements:

  • Drink Breaks: Mandatory water breaks should be taken in the shade every 15–20 minutes when temperatures are high.

  • Hydration: Players must bring their own water bottles to every session.

  • Sun Safety: We strongly encourage the use of “broad-spectrum” sunscreen and hats while off the pitch.

2. Lightning Policy (The 30/30 Rule)

Lightning is a significant risk in outdoor sports. You do not need to be struck directly to suffer serious injury; being within 20m of a struck object (like a tree or goalpost) is considered a lethal zone.

The 30/30 Lightning Safety Guideline:

  • STOP PLAY: If the time between seeing a lightning flash and hearing thunder is less than 30 seconds, play must stop immediately. All participants must seek appropriate shelter.

  • RESUME PLAY: Do not return to the field until at least 30 minutes have passed since the last thunder was heard.

Important: Do not let the desire to finish a match override the safety of our members. Link to the full Football NSW Lightning Policy
